In 2004, India and Sri Lanka experienced worst tsunami in recorded history: 5 million people were left homeless and the death count was estimated at 255,000 people. Within hours of the disaster, Pramukh Swami Maharaj made an appeal for immediate volunteer support in the affected areas and the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha organized an international relief campaign through its centers worldwide. 4,316 homeless families were supplied with household necessities within two days of the disaster, and BAPS Charities supported the distribution of cattle to villagers, the service of 175,000 meals and partnered with Citi Hope to donate and airlift 7 million dollars worth of medical supplies to the affected areas.
