In the summer of 2004, Pramukh Swami Maharaj inaugurated the first traditional Hindu mandirs on North American soil. The month long festivities included a Vishwashanti Maha Yagna, a special prayer for world peace. Nagar Yatras, or cultural processions, were carried through parts of Houston and downtown Chicago on the day before the inauguration. The inauguration festivities were broadcasted to over 170 countries through satellite television. The festivals celebrated Indian heritage and commemorated a permanent, traditional presence of Indian culture in North America. These mandirs will stand as cultural ambassadors for the next 1,000 years. Not only do these mandirs embody India’s culture, but they also play a vital role in preserving its heritage. Through weekly assemblies, festival celebrations, and informational seminars, children and adults will learn about the history and traditions of India.
