Since its inception in 2003, the BAPS Swaminarayan Vidyamandir in Abu has played an active role in protecting the local environment by organizing awareness and plantation programs every year.
This year, around 300 students of the BAPS Swaminarayan Vidyamandir studying in Classes 1 to 7 participated in the 16th annual tree planting program organized by the BAPS Swaminarayan Vidyamandir in Mt. Abu.
Under the supervision of the teachers and other staff, groups of children planted over 200 fruit-bearing trees, and flowering and medicinal plants in the grounds of the BAPS Vidyamandir and the open terrain of the nearby Salgao Vadi. They planted jamun, mango, champa, bougainvillea, avala, adusi and other varieties of trees and plants.
Through their participation in this event, the young children learnt valuable environmental lessons and were taught how to care for nature. They participated by preparing charts and drawings, performing skits, singing poems and also engaged in other activities that raised their understanding about the importance of trees in sustaining life. They were also guided on how to take proper care of plants.
Representing the success of these annual programs, the mango trees planted several years ago now produce more than 700 kg of mangoes every year.
