The ‘Certificate of Distinction’ was awarded to His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj by His Worshipful Mayor of Preston, Councillor Brian Rollo, during the Hindu New Year Celebrations at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Preston, on Sunday 22 October 2017. The award was received by Yogvivek Swami, Head Swami of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London.
The award was in recognition of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s spiritual, humanitarian and charitable contribution to Preston since 1974. Pramukh Swami Maharaj became one of only three individuals to have received this award in the history of the City. The others were Father Timothy Lipscomb for his community services to Preston and Ben Ashworth for his extensive charitable work.
The Mayor explained that the Council was “delighted to award this certificate of recognition to His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj”. An entry confirming this award will be added into the ‘Book of Friendship, Recognition and Distinction’. This book will be kept in the Mayor’s parlour as a historical record.
Neetal Parekh, a volunteer at the Mandir, shared her thoughts on the presentation: “Pramukh Swami Maharaj made countless positive contributions in many cities worldwide. Preston was fortunate to have received his blessings. Since his passing last year, there have been similar tributes in cities across the globe.”
Ambrish Limbachia, also a volunteer at the Mandir added, “Preston’s history dates back prior to the 11th century, and it is remarkable to know that Pramukh Swami Maharaj is one of only three individuals to receive such an award in the long and proud heritage of the City.”
