BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London – popularly known as Neasden Temple – welcomed more than 1,200 architecture and culture enthusiasts during the weekend of 14-15 September 2024 as part of the Mandir’s continued participation in the
Open House Festival, an annual London-wide festival that opens up and celebrates the capital’s architecture, special places and neighbourhoods, with free open days and events held across all 33 London boroughs.
The Open House programme began in 1992 to offer free access to London’s best buildings and inspire the public about the benefits of great design. It is organised by
Open City, a charity dedicated to making architecture and neighbourhoods more open, accessible, and equitable. Following its inception in London, it has grown into a network of almost 60 cities worldwide, from Lagos to Hong Kong and Miami to Oslo.
The Mandir is an active participant in the annual Open House event and welcomed visitors throughout the weekend. Volunteers provided guided walkthroughs, explaining the Mandir’s architecture, history, and religious significance as well as its contributions to the wider community.
Guests also toured the ‘Understanding Hinduism’ exhibition, which offered insights into Hindu beliefs, values, and practices. There were also plenty of opportunities for visitors to witness one of the arti ceremonies during the day.
Ashish Morar, a volunteer at the Mandir, explained, “Since its opening in 1995, countless people from all walks of life and from various corners of the world have walked through its gates, inspired by its spiritual beauty and captivated by its divine presence. It has become an integral part of the local community and Britain’s religious landscape. Although the Mandir is open to visitors of all faiths and backgrounds throughout the year – free of charge – the Open House programme provides an opportunity to celebrate this spirit of inclusivity that is one of this nation’s most endearing qualities.”
Shivani Patel, who helped guide the visitors over the weekend, added, “It was an honour to welcome so many people from across London and beyond to share the cultural and spiritual significance of the Mandir and to engage with them in positive and uplifting dialogue. We also look forward to welcoming people throughout the year.”
