It was in 1984 that His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj first visited the thriving city of Pittsburgh. Now, nearly three decades after his visit, on Sunday, August 31, 2014, BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was inaugurated.
In the presence of Sadguru Pujya Tyagvallabh Swami and Swamis, the grand Mahapuja (yagna ritual) and the Murti Pratishta Vidhi was performed as per ancient Vedic rituals. The ceremonies welcomed the murtis (sacred images) of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, Gunatitanand Swami, Ghanshyam Maharaj, Shri Radha-Krishna, Shri Sita-Ram, Shri Shiva-Parvati, Shri Hanumanji, Shri Ganeshji, and Nilkanth Varni.
The celebrations were joined by devotees, guests and volunteers from throughout the region, many of whom had travelled long distances to participate in the joyous occasion. The celebrations were also joined by Kennedy Township and Alleghany County treasurer, Mr. Mel Weinstein, and John Weinstein who participated in the inauguration ceremonies. Mr. Mel Weinstein welcomed BAPS to the Kennedy Township and extended a hand of friendship.
Following the celebrations, an evening sabha of spiritual discourses was held in the presence of Sadguru Pujya Tyagvallabh Swami.
With a growing Hindu Community, the Mandir will provide a place of worship and spiritual guidance to the many living in the area. The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Pittsburgh truly demonstrates a case for relentless, perseverance and dedication.
