The Sanyukta Mandal National 5-a-side Football Tournament for participants over the age of 40 was held at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London on Sunday 30 January 2011. The event was the second football tournament held for this age group, following the successful launch in 2010 in keeping with the multifarious healthy living activities organised by the Mandir.
The competition was based purely on a league format without a knockout competition to allow all the teams to play an equal number of matches. Following the traditional deep pragatya and words of encouragement from Prabuddhmuni Swami, the series of group matches between all the teams kicked off.
The two finalists from the group stages were Leicester and West London. The final was a tight and competitive affair with West London eventually edging to a 2-1 win.
Leicester and West London emerged as the top two teams, who then played out a thrilling final which West London eventually edged with a 2-1 win.
A new trophy was also added to the tournament this year – the Ghanshyam-Dharmadev Cup – where two teams consisting of fathers and sons competed for the trophy.
