Over 130 balikas in 18 teams from around the UK gathered at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London on Saturday 17 July 2010 for their annual national netball tournament – The Premvati Cup.
The tournament had been divided into three age groups to accommodate the diverse range of players: 6- to 8-year-olds, 9- to 11-year-olds, and 12- to 14-year-olds.
Amid glorious summer sunshine, the tournament began with 35 matches played in the group stages before lunch. All the courts were full of fun, excitement and laughter, along with lively displays of encouragement and support – many from parents who had also come along to join in the fun.
Refreshments were served throughout the day, keeping the children’s energy up for the competitive yet friendly encounters.
After lunch, the semi-finals and finals of each age group were played amid great excitement and team sprit.
The tournament concluded with the closing ceremony in which teams were congratulated for their victory and the winners and runners-up were awarded their trophies.
The tournament was a great show of talent, friendship and unity, played in the highest of spirits regardless of age or centre. All the balikas thoroughly enjoyed themselves and left with fond memories of the Premvati Cup.
